The Sasoritans, also known as Dark Ones and nicknamed Akumapons, are an enemy tribe that appear in Patapon 2 and Patapon 3 that appear alongside the main enemy tribe, the Karmen and Bonedeths, respectively.

Their nature of their alliance with the tribe they appear alongside with is unclear; they were presumably summoned as reinforcements from the Underworld by the Karmen, or they may simply be allies against the Patapons.

Appearance[]

Sasoritans

Sasoritans

Sasoritans are similar to Zigotons in body shape, but have wide angry purple eyes. Standard units wear large horned helmets resembling scorpions. They are led by two generals, The Dark One and Kuwagattan, who are in turn being led by Black Hoshipon, the one who is called "Black Star" or "Dark Star". Despite their efforts to stop the Patapons, they were ultimately defeated by the might of the Patapon Army.

In-game information[]

Patapon 2[]

Sasoritans are first encountered in Mission 13: Sky Castle of the Gods, after destroying the first two Karmen structures. In most of their appearances, they seem to favor Ice or Sleep weapons in combat to stop their enemies. In contrast to the Karmen, Sasoritans notably lack Toritan, Robotan, and Mahotan units in their infantry.

Patapon 3[]

Sasoritans reappear in the third game, and are first encountered in the mission Black Hoshipon Strikes Back alongside Bonedeths, and use Fire/Unique equipment. While remaining largely the same in terms of appearance, Sasoritans are now immune to being frozen, and attack much more rapidly in contrast to their previous appearance in the second game.

Trivia[]

  • Sasoritan is derived from sasori (サソリ), meaning "scorpion". This was confirmed by Kotani in an informal interview.
  • The term "Akumapon" is a fan-made combining "悪魔" (Akuma), which means Demon or Devil in Japanese, and the Patapon suffix "-pon".
    • "Akumapon" and "Akuma" are never mentioned in either Patapon 2 nor Patapon 3.
  • When killed, Sasoritans will utter "Au Revoir!" (a French term for 'goodbye'), and/or "My will is gone..." in the text balloon because some of them have offered their souls for great power.
  • It is possible that Sasoritans are reincarnations of Zigoton soldiers. In the first game, Queen Kharma says that she sacrificed the "Zigoton bloodline" to evil for power. This gave both her and her soldiers immense power, giving them strength and the ability to be reborn, much like Makoton.
    • This may explain why foot soldiers wear scorpion caps, much like Scorpiton.
    • It can also explain why Sasoritans never appeared in the first game, but appeared in the second and third games.
    • Their lack of newer units in Patapon 2 (Toritan, Robotan, and Mahotan) may also allude to the fact that Zigotons also do not have Toritons, Robotons, and Mahotons in their army.
  • In Patapon 3, they are only seen on areas where Balrogs and/or Balrags appear.
  • In Patapon 3, Black Hoshipon speaks of a "Dark Lord", who is no doubt an unknown ruler of the underworld and Sasoritans. Whether it is to be faced or not in a sequel is yet undetermined, but for now it remains unidentified.
